Blue Belt to Black Belt Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Curriculum

The Journey from Technical Development to Mastery

Gracie Jiu-Jitsu | Pedro Sauer Association

Earning your blue belt is a significant milestone, but it is only the beginning of a deeper journey into Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

At Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, Pedro Sauer Association, our progressive curriculum develops practitioners through increasingly sophisticated techniques, positional strategies, defensive systems, and practical self-defence.

As students advance through the ranks, they work towards a deeper understanding of leverage, timing, control, transitions, and technical precision. The objective is to develop well-rounded practitioners who can apply their knowledge intelligently and continue improving throughout their Jiu-Jitsu journey.

Blue Belt to Purple Belt

Purple Belt to Brown Belt

Refining Control, Passing & Submission Systems

The progression towards brown belt develops a more detailed understanding of positional dominance, transitions, takedowns, and submission systems.

Standing Techniques & Takedowns

Students study techniques including Uchimata variations, ankle picks, single-leg entries, foot sweeps, clinch transitions, and Russian-tie techniques.

Positional Transitions

Training covers methods of transitioning from side control to mount, retaining mount against common escape attempts, and moving from mount to back control.

Mount & Side-Control Submissions

The curriculum includes selected chokes, armlocks, kimura variations, and other submission techniques from dominant positions.

Guard Passing

Students develop passing strategies involving knee cuts, stack passes, hip-lock passes, butterfly passing, De La Riva passing, Single-Leg

X passing, X-Guard passing, over-under passing, and Torreando passing.

Lower-Body Submission Awareness

The curriculum also covers selected lower-body submission attacks, defensive tactics, heel exposure, and responses to leg-entanglement positions.

These topics are taken from the Association's Purple to Brown Belt curriculum. <FileCite ref_id="turn2file2" line_range_start={6} line_range_end={59}/>

Advanced Self-Defence

Applying Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Beyond the Mats

The Pedro Sauer Association's Master Curriculum includes standing self-defence against common grabs, chokes, headlocks, bear hugs, punches, kicks, and wall-pin situations.

It also lists weapon-related defence topics involving clubs, knives, and firearms.

These subjects require specialised instruction and careful safety controls. They are taught as part of a broader self-defence curriculum, with techniques practised under appropriate instructor supervision.

The Master Curriculum specifies self-defence demonstrations for purple, brown, and black belt examinations, and weapons demonstrations for brown and black belt examinations. <FileCite ref_id="turn2file3" line_range_start={4} line_range_end={40}/>

Brown Belt to Black Belt

Precision, Understanding & Continued Development

The journey towards black belt represents an ongoing commitment to technical refinement, sound decision-making, responsible training, and a deeper understanding of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Practitioners continue developing their ability to connect techniques, recognise positional opportunities, refine defensive responses, and apply their knowledge with greater precision.

The Association's Master Curriculum provides additional self-defence material relevant to advanced-rank development and examinations.

Please note: The supplied documents do not provide a complete, separate Brown Belt to Black Belt technique list or the full promotion criteria for each rank. Specific requirements and examination standards should be confirmed with the Association.

More Than a Belt

Progress in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is about more than learning new techniques. It requires patience, consistency, humility, discipline, and respect for training partners.

At every level, students are encouraged to train intelligently, support their teammates, and continue learning.

Technique. Control. Discipline. Respect.

These principles reflect the Pedro Sauer Association's approach to developing capable practitioners and responsible martial artists.
