Our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Curriculum
A Structured Journey from Beginner to Blue Belt
At Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, Pedro Sauer Association, we follow a structured approach to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu that helps students build a strong technical foundation, develop practical self-defence skills, and progress with confidence.
Our curriculum combines fundamental movements, standing self-defence, positional control, offensive techniques, defensive strategies, and escapes. Each area contributes to developing a more capable, confident, and well-rounded practitioner.
Whether you are stepping onto the mats for the first time or working towards your blue belt, your training follows a progressive journey built around learning, repetition, and practical application.
What Will You Learn?
1. Fundamentals & Body Movement
Every strong Jiu-Jitsu foundation begins with understanding how to move your body efficiently.
Students learn essential movements such as forward and backward rolls, shrimping, bridging, the upa escape, base positions, and safe standing-up techniques.
These fundamentals form the building blocks for more advanced techniques and help students develop balance, coordination, mobility, and body awareness.
2. Practical Standing Self-Defence
Learn how Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu principles can be applied to common standing confrontations.
Our curriculum includes standing defences against wrist and clothing grabs, two-handed grabs, chokes, and other common forms of physical aggression. Students also study standing control, takedown principles, and appropriate responses to different types of attacks.
Training emphasises technical understanding, controlled practice, and the responsible application of self-defence skills.
3. Defence Against Common Attacks
Understanding how to respond when someone grabs, restrains, or threatens you is an important part of practical self-defence.
Students work through structured defensive techniques covering:
-
Wrist and lapel grabs
-
Standing choke attacks
-
Bear hugs and body restraints
-
Headlocks and head-and-arm control
-
Rear chokes and other standing restraints
-
Selected wall-pin situations and overhead attacks
Techniques are introduced progressively and practised under appropriate instructor supervision.
4. Positional Control & Ground Fundamentals
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu teaches students how to establish and maintain control while understanding the positions that arise during ground grappling.
Our curriculum includes cross-body or side control, maintaining the mount, maintaining back control, and transitioning between positions.
Students develop an understanding of posture, balance, positioning, and the importance of controlling space before attempting more advanced techniques.
5. Offensive Techniques & Submissions
As students develop their fundamentals, they learn how to apply controlled techniques from different positions.
The curriculum includes:
-
Mount: Maintaining control and applying selected submission techniques.
-
Back control: Establishing secure control and learning collar-choke techniques.
-
Guard: Learning sweeps, armlocks, triangles, kimuras, and selected choke techniques.
-
Side control: Maintaining position and applying selected armlock and kimura variations.
All techniques are taught with an emphasis on correct mechanics, appropriate training intensity, and respect for training partners.
6. Escapes, Defences & Recovery
A well-rounded Jiu-Jitsu practitioner needs to understand not only how to control an opponent, but also how to escape disadvantageous positions.
Students learn defensive strategies for recovering guard, escaping side control, defending against headlocks, escaping mount, and recovering from back control.
These techniques help students understand how to protect themselves, create space, regain better positions, and respond more effectively under pressure.
7. Guard Passing & Sweeps
The guard is one of the defining positions in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Our curriculum introduces techniques for overcoming an opponent's guard, maintaining posture, and advancing to stronger positions.
Students also learn fundamental sweeps, including the scissor sweep, hook sweep, and sit-up sweep, which teach them how to use leverage, timing, and positioning to improve their situation.
From White Belt to Blue Belt
Our White to Blue curriculum gives students a structured foundation across the major areas of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Progress comes through consistent attendance, technical repetition, understanding the purpose of each technique, and learning to apply skills appropriately with a training partner.
The objective is not simply to memorise techniques. It is to develop the ability to recognise positions, understand available options, defend effectively, and make sound decisions.
Every student progresses at their own pace under the guidance of their instructor.
Training with Purpose
At Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, Pedro Sauer Association, we believe quality instruction is about more than collecting techniques. It is about understanding the principles behind them.
Our training encourages:
